padShabby Chic Scripture

Create a unique wall accent with words from scripture!

Paint a one-of-a-kind conversation piece right on any wall in your home! This photo shows a soffit area in a breakfast room, with "faith•hope•love" painted to match the shabby chic decor. Other great locations are above a door, window, bed or chair rail. These letters were drawn freehand, but stencils are also readily available.

Supplies:
• paint
• painter's tape
• ruler
• paint &/or stencil brushes
• sponge
• alphabet or custom stencil (optional)
• tracing paper (optional)

Directions:
Choose an area to paint your verse. Select a phrase that fits within those dimensions and that can be read from a suitable distance. For example, to paint letters above kitchen cabinets, the letters will need to be large enough to be read from below. On the other extreme, do not overwhelm the room with letters too large or bold.

Tip:Use your computer to print out letters at the size you're considering, tape them to the wall, then step back and see what you think.

In this example, we first painted a rustic white rectangle over the sage green wall, to set off the subtle letters which we wanted to position far apart. IF you'd like to do a background like ours—measure and tape off a rectangle. Add white paint to your sponge, then dab most of it off. Sponge VERY lightly onto the wall. Have a clean rag handy to dab or "rag off" any heavy areas. Don't create a perfect rectangle—leave the base color visible in several places along the edge. Let dry.

You can create your letters several ways:
1. Freehand - Measure the width of the space, divide by the number of letters and draw a dot where each letter should be centered. Then, paint each with a fine brush.
2. Tracing - If you have a computer, select an appropriate font to create your verse. Then print it out at the exact size to go on the wall. Place tracing paper between these sheets and the wall, use a pencil to trace along the outline of all your letters. The paper will leave markings on the wall for you to then fill in with paint.
3. Alphabet Stencil - Most craft and home improvement stores now carry a stencil kit of the entire alphabet. Measure and position each letter carefully, then use a stencil brush to paint in each letter, one at a time.
4. Custom Stencil - Many online companies will create a custom stencil of your entire phrase AND you can choose from an assortment of fonts. (Some of these are one-time-use and actually adhere to the wall.)

We used a darker green to paint our letters. After they were dry, we went back in and VERY softly sponged some more white paint over the top, wiping most of it off, creating our shabby chic finish.

Tips:
The font in which you create your phrase will greatly impact your finished home accent. Choose your letters to suite the style of your room—modern, classic, child's handwriting, script, etc.
